For all those "temps," "contractors," "independents," or
otherwise migrant tech-writers out there, the U.S. Census
Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics published
information which might be of interest to you. The
"Current [sic] Population Survey: February, 1995:
Contingent Work Supplement" includes such topics as:
arrangements, work done, expectations for continuing
employment, satisfaction with current employment
arrangement, transition to current employment
arrangement, search for other employment, employee
BENEFITS and EARNINGS (emphasis added).
The price is hefty ($175 U.S.), but maybe a university or
public library near you has it. It's available on CD-ROM
and magnetic tape from Customer Services
(301-457-4100). Otherwise, the BLS report containing
the same data, "New Data on Contingent and Alternative
Employment," is available in print from BLS
(202-606-6378), or from their web site
(http://www.bls.gov), "Publications," "News Releases."
