The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I have only been in this game for the past three years, but I have worked for
three companies, one mega, one contractor, and one medium/small. I would have
to say push the eject button and contract, unless:
A) The opportunities to try new and exciting things exists at this new company
B) You will actually be considered on the same level as the
programmers/engineers
C) They have stupendous benefits
The real issue is what can you gain by joining this company. They are lucky to
have someone who is willing to follow their work, with all the product
knowledge, etc. Some good questions are:
1. Who controls the content and concept of your web page? Do you have a web
page?
2. What is the review process for your documentation? (If everyone in the
company must approve it, it becomes very frustrating...)
3. What are the plans to increase usability and decrease printing costs?
(This would give you an idea of what they are going to move towards: web access
for manuals and information (html), CD-ROM (scripting and User interface), or
online help (html/hypertext/RoboHelp))
I hope this helps some.
