I agree with the others that tech writing can be a really
exciting job. Those who think that we do nothing but sit
around and write bone-dry manuals have never seen the whole
profession. As to what's next: among the professions that
aren't generally considered are thousands of professional
publications that need editors and writers, the whole new
arena of hypermedia document design editing, virtual reality
document design and editing (much the same thing), and
RESEARCH! FUN! FUN! FUN! This field is old (some of the
really fun technical documents were written in the 16th
Century), but has recently gone through a major shift, and
so is brand new--so new that we all spend much of our time
trying to figure out what is going on. For years I envied
my wife, a world-class, aerospace research engineer; now I
wouldn't change places with her for all of the ink in India.

As far as I am concerned you are entering the most exciting
new profession of all.

My opinion, for what its worth.
