Susan -- Thanks for pointing me to the glimpse search engine. I've checked it
out, and it does appear to be a good search engine. Also, the site lists many
interesting resources ... so I'll mention it to the Web masters for the ASI
(American Society of Indexers) Web site (http://www.well.com/user/asi/).
No matter how good a search engine is, tho', it doesn't replace an index, mostly
because it doesn't provide a real "topic analysis" showing how topics
interrelate and, of course, it is limited only to words that actually appear in
the document. Also, there is little or no opportunity for users to experience
the "serendipity" of discovering other information of value to them.
Unless others on this list are really interested in this thread, I'd suggest
that you, David Blyth, and I discuss it offline. BTW, I'll be away from my
office for the rest of this week. And now ... I'd better finish packing!
