Using Humor Judiciously

As writers, much of our work focuses on making sure people get what they
expect. I can imagine numerous good uses of humor for products or
documentation, e.g., games, learning tools for children. But I wouldn't
dream of using it in any of my work (writing and editing for a consulting
engineering firm). So maybe a question is "Would its use enhance the
effectiveness of the communication?" Then go from there, but cautiously.
