I used to have a set of Surtees' works from early in the 19th century. The
plates were hand-coloured with water-colour wash. This was common practice.
For darker areas the wash went over some cross-hatching. Occasionally the
colours differed from the text descriptions. Some things never change.
Robert should have said something like "mass-produced colour appeared...".
The plates from illustrated magazines were an important decorative feature
in poor 19th century homes.
