I'm posting a portion of your comments along with my replies to the list.
Your theme goes along with many of the replies I've received. My response is
typical to many I've sent.

>Pleasant dreams! When you wake up, try fitting both a writer and an
>illustrator into a budget that has room for only half of one or the other, but
>not a whole one of either.

A Swiss Army Knife is good for many things, but excellent at none. I'd hate
to sit down at a first class restaurant and be handed a spork.

>So what do other folk think of all this?

Quite varied responses. But, as you can see, many. I think I hit a little
nerve. In your remarks, I sense a little "it's the way it is because it's
the way it is". It's my feeling that we've created this monster and we
love/hate to feed it. The publishing profession is too honorable to become a
world of Jacks and Jills of all trades, masters of none. (I know there are a
few geniuses out there - so you're not included in this terrible
generalization.) PC's, publishing packages and drawing softwares have made
many of us feel quite proficient at writing, editing, spelling, grammar,
page layout, typography, design and illustration. It's fun.

Now, for all you writer/illustrators. Please send me samples of your
technical illustrations. I studied at RISDI (Rhode Island School of Design),
I've judged my share of STC illustration contests and will send you my
honest critique. Any takers?
