I'll try to tie together some of the previous posts on this.
Regarding a "the greatest good of the greatest number" approach
to tech comm, it may be useful to explore how it relates to a
"user-based" approach. This is, in fact, a problem in audience
analysis that even Plato had grappled with.
I like a "user-based" approach because it can subsume a number
of particular audience types. "User" may be related in terms
similar to the "greatest number." One may often need to
accommodate an audience whether manifest as a "one" or a "many."
Both may be important to the development and use of a product.
I don't know of any better approach than a "user-based" approach
for accomplishing this.
