Roxanne,
We have used two standards, both of which were approved by our legal
department:

1. Use the TM or circle R symbol at the first usage of the term, with a
footnote type entry.
e.g. Microsoft is a registered trademark of the Microsoft Corporation.
2. List all trademarks and registered trademarks on the bottom of the
disclaimer page. Then you don't have to catch the first usage.

|I have a question about the use of trademark and registered trademark
|symbols in scientific text. There are two schools of thought here, and t=
|he
|discussions are getting quite lively. One thinks that you only put in th=
|e
|symbol when talking about a product (Microsoft=AE Word) another thinks th=
|at
|you put it in whenever you see the name (Microsoft=AE). We have looked i=
|n the
|Government Printing Office Style Manual and it does not say anything abou=
|t
|it. The GPO is our mainstay because we are contractors to NASA and must
|comply, but in this instance information from any source would help.

|Thanks!
