Such bother, such confusion about what to call a year.
I don't think we should worry about this any more. Let's just let
this be a corporate decision -- I'm waiting to see what Twentieth
Century Fox does. So far it's still using the same visual it's been
using most of this century, but announcers are calling it Fox. If
they wimp out, will pundits see this (in)action as the collapse of
Western Civilization?
What's driving this fretting is the ancient problem of writers. Do we
follow the lead of the people in selecting terminology? I vote for
the people and write tote bag where others may prefer reticule.
Actually, I think the news readers will be the deciders on this
issue. The public will follow the usage they hear on the news,
professors will sell articles and books deploring whatever is used,
and the IRS will send us tax forms. Not to worry.
