Jim,

ISO 9000 is the international family of standards for quality
systems and the friend to Technical Writers everywhere.

The standards comprise a requirements specification for the
activities that an organisation must build into its processes (or
operational procedures) to ensure that the organisation can supply
products and services that are fit for purpose (that is, meet the
customers perceived and actual requirements).

ISO 9001 is the comprehensive standard for organisations whose
activities include design (for example software developers).
ISO 9002 is the standard for organisations whose activities are
limited to production (for example printers or disc manufacturers).
ISO 9003 is the standard whose quality control activities are limited
to final inspection and test activities only (an organisation that
resells rebadged equipment may fall into this small category)

Other ISO 9000 related documents are guides to the specific
application of the other parts. For example, ISO 9000-3 is a guide
for applying ISO 9000 to software development.

This is probably the shortest guide that I can give you.

Please let me know if I can be of specific help. To obtain the
standard(s), contact the sales outlet of your national standards
body.
