I originally sent my reply directly to Karen, but I hadn't
realized at the time that she posted her question to the list.
So, in case other list members were wondering about "internet"
and "Internet", here was my reply to Karen:

>>A direct analogy would be "internet" and "Internet".

> Okay, I give. How the heck are "internet" and "Internet" different?
> As far as I know, they are the same thing. But you're claiming that PC
> card and PC Card are different.

Hi, Karen.

Internet, with a capital I, refers to THE Internet--what you and
I are using to send mail to each other.

The word "internet" is a common networking industry-recognized
abbreviation for "interconnected network". So, an internet is a
network composed of two or more smaller networks, which
may or may not be connected to THE Internet.

It's confusing, and I argued for there being only one "Internet"
whether it was capitalized or not, the last time this topic was
discussed (almost a year ago). But the folks arguing for the
distinction between them, along with my own research, eventually
convinced me.
