I used to do consulting on converting direct-mail catalog production shops
from traditional, manual-based design and production to electronic
publishing (I say 'used to' because they've almost all been converted by
now), so I have a lot of experience with the catalog design process. In
summary, there is a LOT to it.

I would ask first: what kind of catalog, and who is the audience? If you
are teaching yourself, some of your best material may come from studying
other similar catalogs that seem to be effective.
