As well as the books mentioned in other postings on GUI design, I would
recommend the following if you are into HEAVY reading:

1. Defense Information Systems Agency, Center for Information Management
Human Computer Interface Style Guide.

2. Applying Cognitive Psychology to User-interface Design. M.M. Gardiner
& B. Christie eds. John Wiley & Sons.

The first is very defense oriented and gives little explanation of the
why's and wherefor's. The second is excellent, giving practical points
as a summary to each chapter - I have found it invaluable not just for
user interface design but also for 'normal' paper-based documentation.
