Jane,
I think it's beneficial to at least have a working knowledge of "C". It doesn't
mean you should be proficient enough to write scripts, but it would give you a
technical edge not many writers have.

I'm in a similar situation -- my position requires a good deal of technical
knowledge, and ability to understand the "guts" of our product. I had the
opportunity to take a class in SQR (structured query reporting) in August so I
could better understand the database and its information. Now, I'm writing
documentation AND programming in SQR, and it's not that hard.

In addition to giving a technical edge, this skill makes you even more
marketable as time goes on.
