Kris Olberg writes to John Brinegar:

What makes you think that a production department cannot do the job as well
as you?

** I don't speak for John, but I'd be wary of any production department or
other collaborator who didn't understand what I was trying to express.
Getting the graphical side right for a technical publication
is not as easy as for an automobile ad or a romance novel.
As a technical writer, I may need structures and emphases that a
designer unfamiliar with my subject may be unable to intuit from the
raw text. In dealing with technical advertising, I've met several
designers who resist the idea of spending time learning the technical
side of the basic message they're being asked to convey. Then they
apply some template that's not right for the content.
