you risk introducing the term into the public domain.

Then when you get your registration, you don't need to immediately
throw away all your TM-marked literature and replace it with (R)-marked
literature. TM doesn't really mean UNregistered trademark so much
as it means NOT NECESSARILY registered trademark. Of course, if you
can legitmately use an (R) you'll want to; but particularly for other
people's trademarks, you're not obliged to go researching every single
possible registration.
