Question about making a index entry

Hi there.

This is my first posting. I've been lurking for a long time.

I write documentation (online and paper) for communication software.
In several documents that I inherited, I noticed that there are index
entries for file extensions, such as .INI files and .BMP files.
Sometimes they are indexed as .BMP and appear at the beginning of the
index in the special characters section. At other times, the .BMP has
been moved to the B section.

I'd like to know how others index these entries.
Do you use a period with the extension name .BMP or just BMP?
Do you move the index entry to another section or leave it in the
special characters section?

Thanks.
