Displaying Spanish Diacritical Marks?

Subject: Displaying Spanish Diacritical Marks?

Sorry if this is slightly off-topic:

I am trying to find transcription rules for showing Spanish diacritical marks
(e.g., tildes and accents) online when the display font can't accomodate the
actual character. I can figure out that "n" with a tilde can be spelled "ny,"
but what do you do about accents when just omitting them can change the
meaning of a word?

I'd appreciate any answers or suggestions for resources.
