Mark,
Welcome. Your first question - I remember fondly the days when I had
only three or four projects to look after simulteneously. Most days, I
generally have five or six major projects on the go and all sorts of little
incidents cropping up every few minutes. I learned how to handle this the
hard way. When I first starting doing a number of concurrent projects, I
tried to keep all of my records in my head. This proved to be an unmitigated
disaster. Now I take copious notes, have extensive To-Do lists and have
become extremely religious. So far it seems to work.
I've found that in this business, it is either feast or famine. There
have been times when I have way too much to do in too little time or nothing
to do and oodles of time in which to do it.
As for software to manage these projects. The company I work for has
the software (microsoft project, i think) but because of the complex lease
arrangements, I don't have it on my PC and won't get it until I get a new
one (soon I hope!).
Best of Luck with your work, and don't worry about the work load. If
its heavy, you know you've got a better than even chance of being steadily
employed for awhile. If you have nothing to do, you might consider polishing
your C.V.

Regards
Paul Cheverie

I'm curious about the phrase "Project Management Skills" seen in so many
position descriptions. Is it fairly common for TWs to juggle three or
four projects simultaneously? And, if this is true, were you born with
this ability or did you acquire it out of necessity? Finally, does
anyone use project management software to control their writing projects?
