Subject:Do X-rays Damage Disks? From:David G Anderson <anderson -at- GLEN-NET -dot- CA> Date:Mon, 14 Aug 1995 17:31:32 -0400
Does one pass a laptop or diskettes through an airport X-ray?
The danger to the data on magnetic media is from the field emanating from
the large electromagnet used to generate the X-rays (which are harmless to
the data). I stand and watch time on time as the victims scrupulously argue
their way past the X-rays and then brush close to the electro-magnet housing
which is the REAL peril. The airport security personnel never seem to be
educated on this one. It's a case of avoiding a false peril and being zapped
by the unknown peril. T o o bad!
