In my research on international technical communication most resources
indicated that technical communication should avoid using symbols like #,
/ and so on for all of the reasons everyone has stated thus far. The # has
many meanings, making it very difficult for translators and nonnative
readers of your source language documents to understand the intended
meaning of the symbol.
