Subject:Outsourcing, Layoffs, Contractors and Unions From:Vince Putman <PUTMV -at- MAIL -dot- SYNTRON -dot- COM> Date:Mon, 10 Jul 1995 07:22:12 CST
Steve,
Your recent comments on the TECHWR-L about the problems we face as TechWriters
fit a great number of people out here. The problem has even deeper roots. Many
companies of all sizes are using this loophole to not only save them the cost of
benefits, but to purge their staff without fear of law suits. You know -- the
old layoff scam!
This subject is huge and without major changes in the laws, it will become
critical. Specially when many of us can no longer work and have insufficient
funds to retire on. Remember the change in the law which made companies liable
for any taxes a Contractor did not pay? I think it went into effect in 1990.
This stupid action deprives contractors of the 501K plan since most personnel
agencies that the companies use to protect them against the tax liability, do
not offer 501K. So we end up without enough retirement funds.
What's a body to do? The damn politicians just provide lip service.
As you said: "outsourcing is classic worker exploitation, and to counteract it I
would welcome any source of relief, even unionization".
