You asked about making scanned photos available on the Web.
On suggestion for an approach I've seen used elsewhere. Put those reduced .gif
photos as thumbnails on your Web page. They will download faster to the reader
and give them an idea what the photo is about. At the same time, tag those
thumbnails as links that will enable the reader to download the larger, more
detailed files. You could do this in such a way that you actually give the
reader a choice of several formats and the person can pick the one s/he wants
to receive.
If you put detailed b&w's up there in any reasonable size and detail, they are
going to be very big and very slow to download.
