We hashed this out ad nauseam on the copyeditors list and even had a vote.
The gist of it was that about half of the list wanted to abandon use of the
masculine singular pronouns for generic singular antecedents. A significant,
but smaller group was ready to replace them with third person plural
pronouns. ...RM
