I am a pubs 1st line manager at Tandem Computers in Cupertino, CA and
currently have an open personnel requisition for a Techwriter I. However,
the req. is limited to recent college graduates (Aug. '94 or later) or those
graduating this summer.

The group I manage is responsible for documenting the networking products
Tandem sells with our systems. We deal with some standard networking
protocols, like TCP/IP, X.25, IPX/SPX, ATM, SONET, Netbios, etc. as well as
some proprietary LAN access protocols, terminal access methods, file
transfer programs (FTP, IXF), and application programming interfaces. We
handle mostly software but do have a WAN concentrator and a few data comm
controllers in our area of responsibility.

There are also two other similar college new-hire requisitions open in other
pubs sections. One in the group that produces customer documentation
explaining how to install, configure, operate, and support Tandem servers
and peripherals. The other is in the group that develops programming
manuals for the Guardian (Tandem's proprietary operating system) and POSIX
application program interfaces (APIs) to Tandem's NonStop Kernel. This group
also develops system architecture information, such as Server Description
manuals.

To regurgitate the verbiage on the requisition itself:

General technical writing duties include ability to analyze product
requirements documents, specifications, and strategy documents; interview
developers, product managers, course instructors, and support analysts; and
experiment with products. Obtain and act on feedback from customer surveys,
site visits, reader comment cards, hotline messages, and TPRs (bug reports).
Size efforts for writing projects, create operating plans, and establish and
meet schedules. Create and modify text, online help text, illustrations,
examples, and indexes, and conduct technical reviews and inspections.
Review and edit documents written by others with respect to content, style,
format, completeness, usability, and accuracy. Use information development
tools and other Tandem tools.

More specifically, a Technical Writer 1 under direct supervision revises
technical information that is highly structured and of limited technical
complexity. Compiles information from existing documents, and edits
information for grammar, style, and format.

Technical Writer 1 requires a bachelor's degree, preferably in Computer
Science or other technical field, Technical Writing, or other writing field,
or equivalent experience.

Since I no longer suscribe to this list, please send any responses or
inquiries directly to me.
