Arthur Comings asked about how to gracefully notify users of delays
that occur while the software processes a command. I feel the best
approach is to be straightforward: State that "this command will take
about one minute to execute". If there's substantial variation among
computers (e.g., 1 min. on a Pentium/PowerPC vs. 30 min. on a
386/68030), indicate this too. Not cute, but effective.
