Bob,
Get permission from everyone whose response you plan to
publish.

Folks,

I have a question on TECHWR-L etiquette: I recently posted a question on online
hardware documentation, and received lots of valuable responses. Many were
emailed directly to me. I've had a request from an STC chapter to allow them to
publish the thread. I've given them permission to publish my thoughts, but
wondered about all the responses I received.

Normal netiquette is not to forward messages you receive in email unless you
have the permission of the originator. On TECHWR-L, I frequently see posts
consisting of compilations of responses to other posts. Some questions:

o Are posted responses considered fair game for
compilation/redistribution without permission of the originator?

o Are responses sent directly to a poster (that is, not via the
list) also considered fair game?

o What about subsequent publication in a document or another list?
Is permission required for use of responses to posts in another
forum or in print?

I'll look forward to your advice. (I'm a digest subscriber, so my responses may
be delayed.)

Bob
