I used to work at a software development company where they did, in fact,
ask engineering candidates to evaluate code and/or uncover bugs. And it was
company policy that all writer candidates had to complete a standard writing
exercise (much like the "toaster" one).

As a writer, I too would find it uncomfortable to be required to take a
test. But as a manager--and one who has been burned too often by
self-styled "writers"--I can't help but be very interested in this thread.
