Laurie (and others) -

We (the DC chapter and the host chapter planning committee) are putting
together a list of alternative hotels. I'll post it as soon as it's
available. If you're looking for hotels in the meantime, ask about
ones that are on the Metro line. The Washington Sheraton is on the Red
Line of the Metro system, so hotels close to other stops on the
Red line will make it easier to get to the Sheraton. Hotels in the
"burbs" (MD or VA) will generally be less expensive than the ones in
the city, but you can still find some good deals even in DC. Check out
Bethesda (MD), which is just outside of the city and close to the Red line.
There's a nice Holiday Inn there that's close to the Metro stop, and
there's a Hyatt (probably not a big savings over DC) that's directly
at the Bethesda Metro stop.

Hope this helps.
