Greg -- fyi ... here's the list I sent to Kimberly Lackey
(INTERNET:97372509 -at- WSUVM1 -dot- CSC -dot- WSU -dot- EDU), the original poster ....

Kimberly -- Here's my list of top-ten books:

1. _The Chicago Manual of Style_
2. _The Elements of Style_ by William Strunk, Jr. and E.B. White
3. _On Writing Well_ by William Zinsser
4. _Words into Type_
5. _Modern English Usage_ by H.W. Fowler
6. _Indexing Books_ by Nancy Mulvany
7. _Indexing from A to Z_ by Hans H. Wellisch
8. _Copyediting: A Practical Guide_ by Karen Judd
9. _Writing for the Computer Industry_ by Kristin R. Woolever
and Helen M. Loeb
10. _Documentation Development Methodology_ by Sandra Pakin &
Associates
***

This is a balanced list; it contains books several good books on style
(which is the basis of *all* good writing), indexing, and editing as well
as two excellent books specifically for technical writers. If I could
have no more than ten books in my reference library, these are the ten I
would want.
