As far as I know, "select" and "choose" have different, specific,
meanings on some platforms. Apple uses "select" to mean "highlight";
"choose" to mean "execute" (a menu option), for example.

Some people use "click" as an alternative to "click on", too (eg. "click
the icon").

I use "click on" and "doubleclick on", because the action is clear: the
user doesn't have to remember (or guess) what the words mean. In the
jargon, this entails less cognitive load.
