The other thing to note is that once you distribute something, if you
don't put a copyright notice on it ("copyright 1994 A. Writer"), you
can lose all protection: the "common law" copyright protects you from
creation to publication, but thereafter if you don't claim copyright,
the item may land in the public domain.
