Although copyright of a document (or piece of artwork, software, music
etc.) is automatic and instantaneous upon creation, you may wish to
use the 'poor man's/woman's (!) copyright'. Put a copy of your
document (diskette, cassette tape, etc.) in a self-addressed envelope,
seal it and then mail it to yourself. The postmark on the unopened
envelope becomes proof of the date of creation.

While this may not provide iron-clad protection against serious
thieves, it is a useful method for those who produce large numbers of
documents (registration fees can become prohibitive).
