Utah Establishes Technical Communication Week
On October 12th, Governor Leavitt proclaimed the week of October
17-23 as Technical Communication (Tech Comm) Week. Utah joins a
growing list of states that officially recognize the contribution that
writers, editors, translators, graphic designers, and educators make to
the technology industries. The proclamation is sponsored by the
Intermountain Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC)
-- the largest organization of its kind in the world.

Utah Communicators Share Their Experience
"As a native, it has been a thrill to be a part of the development of the
information technology industry in Utah," says Marj Hermansen,
documentation specialist at Novell, Inc., and president of the local chapter
of the STC. "As a technical communicator, I value my role as a bridge
builder--between those who create ideas and those who use
them--working together to provide our customers with cutting edge
technology."

As a prelude to Tech Comm Week, the Intermountain Chapter of the STC
sponsored a free workshop on how to index manuals. During October
20th through 22nd, technical communicators from Novell, Wordperfect,
Utah State University, Utah Valley State College, and Brigham Young
University will present papers at a regional conference in Vancouver,
British Columbia. Topics include writing for the space industry,
distributing online help using the Internet, and using continuous
improvement tools to move toward ISO 9000 certification.

STC Welcomes Participation
The STC offers presentations, workshops, competitions, and other
opportunities to enhance professional communication skills. For more
information about Tech Comm Week or STC, contact the Intermountain
Chapter STC at (801) 575-3941.
