You, me, and Cyberspace

The Phoenix Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC) is
planning an exciting program for its October meeting. At the suggestion of
some of our members, we are pursuing the idea of allying ourselves with
Glendale Community College to highlight the dramatic opportunities and
benefits of the Internet.
The expansion of commercial, educational, governmental and personal
communication via Internet is expected to contribute to what will become a
nearly one-trillion dollar-a-year industry with hundreds of millions of
users worldwide.
Both the Maricopa Community College District (MCCD) and the International
Society for Technical COmmunication have a significant stake in this
development and can benefit enormously by increasing their visibility in
this field.

What does the Internet mean to STC members?
Information developers, technical writers and other documentation
specialists provide the user-advocacy, documentation and performance support
needed for the thousands of companies and institutions selling and servicing
products on the "Information Superhighway."

And what about MCCD and Glendale Community College?

With more than 100,000 students enrolled each year, the District is an
established leader in distance education and the "virtual campus." Glendale
Community College is recognized nationally by institutions such as
Rensselaer Polytechnic and MIT for its innovative approaches to educating
both the users and the developers of the "Information Superhighway." The
Electronic Forum, Flex Format courses, and GCC's Electronic Classroom are
unequaled anywhere in the state.
Technology and business magazines such as Fortune and Information Week
regularly quote industry executives as saying they have "no idea" where they
are going to find the human resources to handle the exploding customer
demand for training, education, support and maintenance for clients,
employees, vendors and their complex systems scattered all over the globe.
Both STC, with its international membership of over 12,000, and MCCD are in
a position to provide industries with those human resources. STC's proposed
program for October will attract not only its own members but also local
business and technology managers, academic leaders, and present and future
students of the technology.
The STC Program
The program will include:
o    a brief tour of the High Tech Center and the electronic classroom where
we hope to have a live Internet connection setup through the EF,
o    a catered meal from the Olive Grill,
o    a presentation on the history and future of Internet,
o    an overview of some note-worthy services (Gopher, FTP, etc.),
o    information on how to gain access to the Internet via membership in the
Electronic Forum.
STC's local Phoenix Chapter has 230+ members who hold positions in some of
the states leading high-tech companies including:
o    Motorola,
o    Honeywell, and
o    Intel.
STC's membership meets on the second Tuesday of each month.
