Grant--

As with anything, variety is the spice of life. Combine related sentences
into compound sentences once in awhile, write actively (that shouldn't cause
an abrupt style), and read your work aloud on occasion. If it sounds
disjointed, go back and write it as you would speak it.

If you're looking for examples of someone who writes concisely without being
abrupt, check out William Zinsser's _On Writing Well_. He has three rules
of writing: Simplify, simplify, simplify. I am glad my freshman comp.
teacher recommended him to me, because I think it's helped me be a better
tech. writer (even though that wasn't what I set out to be!). It also helps
me in my fiction writing.

FWIW.
