I use this for 2 reasons:

(1) I haven't been using Usenet for long, & I'm not even part of the same
(national) culture as most of you folks, so I err on the side of caution.

(2) As another contributor has pointed out, it's an old tradition in
English fiction, and one I'm rather fond of.

Maybe it should have been accompanied by :-)
