After I had been a technical writer for a few years, I was laid off and needed
to update my resume for the first time as (I now thought of myself) a real,
honest-to-goodness PROFESSIONAL technical writer .
At first, I just used the same old techniques (first try functional, then
try chronological; put education first, no, move it back to the end...)
Then I realized that, unlike other professions, my resume was an actual
vehicle for presenting skills....I reformatted based on a manual style I had
developed (but was not able to implement due to the layoff), and it was
considered very effective and impressive by all who encountered it.
I also tailored the resume to every job, which DOES NOT mean I tampered with
truth, but merely, and wisely, tailored the information to the audience.
