To: The rest of us STC members

Now that the rich and the subsidized members of the STC on
Internet have set their systems to NOMAIL and flown off to
Minneapolis, it is time for the rest of us to take up the
most significant reason we not have gone: Money.

I have for some years implored those people in power in the STC
to bring the costs of the conference down to the level where
members in the academic world and those in small businesses could
afford to come. I have offered them myriad comparisons to the
costs of other conferences I attend at times and it seems to make
no impression on them since they see only the costs of various
"industry" conferences, which most of us could never afford.

I maintain that the comparison should be to "educational"
conferences, not "industry" conferences, since STC claims to
be an educational organization. From my experience, whenever
a half dozen STC members gather together anywhere, it is only
a matter of time before the a discussion of the high cost of
the annual conference comes up.

For some unkown reason, the STC board does not want to hear
such discussions of money. They seem immune to it. I have even
attended a board meeting and implored them to take this issue
up. They dismissed me like a poor relative.

I would like to hear from other STC members who believe the
cost of the annual conference is too high and prevents them
from attending it. Please respond to my personal address
(see below) and NOT to the list.
