A good referent for this thread is The Language Instinct by Steven Pinker,
Director of the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience at MIT.

This should probably be required reading for anyone that's contemplating
writing or editing a manuscript. And (ooch! don't tell Mrs. Johnson I did
that) it also features sections on the utility of passive sentences, dangling
participles and prepositions and regional colloquialisms.

Whether you agree with his overall premise or not, his observations
concerning the use of language are extraordinarily accurate and very
unorthodox (how may orthoes does it take to make a dox?).
