I have one more thing to add to this string that I just remembered,
and then I'll shut up (and please, don't anyone write to thank me).

A couple years ago, after General Atomics did a massive layoff
(including me) and after I had taken temporary editorial work at
another company, I tried to convince a friend of mine who had also
been laid off from G.A. to take temporary work while he looked for
permanent work, like me. But he was sure that the way to a
high-paying job was to avoid temporary work and concentrate, instead,
on a career search through a course with a career counselor.

After I had been working fulltime at my temporary job for a year,
making lots of money (because it was temporary), he was still
unemployed. So I tried to convince him again. Ha! He was still sure
he'd get that $50,000 job his way with his career counselor! When my
temporary assignment ended, he had the counselor call me. She told me
how much. To be honest, I forget the exact figure, but it was high
enough for me to say, "If I had that kind of money I'd get my Masters
degree."

By the way, my friend did finally resort to temporary work.
