For me, TEHCWR-L fulfills the same purpose that wandering around the
halls does. I get embroiled in conversations that, on the surface,
may look like non-sequiters, but down the road turn into useful

Even the flame wars and overzealous, over-long,
probably-should-be-private discussions serve a purpose for me. As an
STC Chapter president, any feedback as to the state of mind of tech
writers is at least interesting, and often provides insights about
what topics to base meetings on. For example, based on the number of
posts, I may be adding a grammar table the next time I do a
round-table discussion meeting.

This list is going to be the same kind of sanity-saver that STC itself
was when I was the Lone Writer at my previous company, especially if I
end up contracting and working out of my house. It's just nice to
"talk" to people in your own profession, no matter what the weight of
the discussion is. It's also nice to be able to help occasionally by
doing so (at the very least, if affirms that I do, in fact, know
something useful to SOMEONE).

IMHO, of course.
