Sue Stewart wonders about OED on think/thing. Somebody has already
noted attestation of _think_ as substantive from _Tait's Magazine_,
occuring in "We lie down yonder . . . and have time for our ain
think." (1834)

I like this one, might stand as an epitaph for this thread:

"A thing must be a think before it be a thing." --G. MacDonald,
_Home Again IV_, 1887.

Looks to be of Scots origin.
