The Silicon Valley chapter of the STC asked attendees of the December
Crystal Ball holiday party to submit predictions of the future of
technical communication. Some of you expressed interest in seeing
these, so Kerri Lawnsby gathered the ones that she still had in her
email files to pass on to you. Unfortunately, the writers' names
of all but the winners were lost in this process.
The first one is the winner--Matthew Mason from the Lone Star chapter
in Dallas:
"Driving While Computing (DWC) will become a traffic offense,
punishable on first offense by removal of the offender's cellular
modem. Repeat offenses are punishable by having the arresting
officer reformat the hard drive."

"The term "technical" will go out of fashion. People want products
that are "easy to use". All technical communicators will become UI
designers since we seem to be the only ones who can tell the customers
how to use products. And this won't change... even in the future."
