Get the latest version of Word (version 6). It has settings files and
document variables.

You will also need to get the Word Developer's Kit (list $39.95) which is
the documentation for WordBasic. In fact, page 185 has an example of a
WordBasic macro that does just what you want to do.

You could modify that macro accoring to your needs and cause it to be invoked
either automagically or manually, depending on when you wanna set the
document number.

I have learned quite a bit about WordBasic the past few weeks, in writing
macros to change hard coded cross references from Word V2 to the new
automatic cross references of v6, in the process, I learned a bunch more
about WordBasic. It was fun! (confessions of a former/perhaps born-again
programmer).
