I grew up thking, as you apparently do, that gender was a grammatical term,
a characteristic of nouns. Perhaps it's the case that gender is now available
for other uses, English nouns having lost that characteristic a few centuries
bac An argument for the use of _gender_ in its present politicized sense is
that, when you hear it coming you can hit the delete button or tell folks to
take the discussion to another conference. Myself, I've been using the delet.
