I feel that I should know the answer to this - but don't:
Is there a rule to use when abbreviating the name of each state in USA? Or must
one simply learn all the two letter codes?
In Australia, states/territory names made up of more than one word are
abbreviated by taking the first letter of each word in the name, therefore: NSW
= New South Wales; WA = Western Australia; SA = South Australia; ACT =
Australian Capital Territory; NT = Northern Territory. One-word names are
abbreviated to the first three letters: VIC = Victoria; TAS = Tasmania. The
exception is Queensland which is abbreviated to QLD.
But since there are so few, it isn't necessary to know the rules.
