The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Anything that needs instructions or explanations in any field or area of life.
This includes any subject that interests you:
Bird identification
Making curtains
Programming the VCR (Who the heck wrote that piece anyway?)
Playing the guitar
Compiling baseball statistics
Creating spread sheets
Gardening
Playing computer games (Personally, I'd love a job at SSI)
Text books
Carpentry
Crafts
Taking care of the elderly
Medicine
Social services
Income tax instructions (The same guy that did the VCR instructions)
You've got the idea. The list goes on and on, limited only by your own
interests. The catch is finding the right company that will hire you as
an employee or contractor.
Salary
Salaries usually go with the career field involving the topic. Sometimes
that is influenced by the department of the company that you are in also.
For example, someone who works for a software dev. department makes about
the same as a programmer of the same level, years of experience and expertise.
Someone who writes gardening manuals would be on an
entirely different scale.
Job opportunities
Depends on the area of interest and the opportunities in your area.
Level of job satisfaction
Like any job, it depends on all types of factors.
Is your job in your area of interest?
Do you like the people you work with?
Do you like the company you work for?
Do you feel you get the salary and respect you deserve?
Basically, it's a wide open field. It is what you make of it.
