Two MIT faculty members, James Paradis, Professor in the Writing Program,
and Leslie Perelman, Coord. of the Writing Requirement, are studying
evolving conventions in e-mail I was unable to attend a presentation they
did in January, but have talked to Paradis.

They see e-mail as dual in nature: comparable to phone conversation,
where meaning is often shaped by context and immediate interaciton of the
parties; and it has the permanence of writing and all that that implies
(can be saved, printed, reviewed, held for accountability, etc.).

Paradis and Perelman are also looking at ethical questions of e-mail in
the workplace.

There may be a book in the works, but if you contact Paradis he will
probably be glad to pass along more details on their findings.
